This work was carried out in the Santa Catalina Experimental Station of the INIAP-Ecuador, lo- cated at an altitude of 3 050 meters, with an average temperature of 12°C and 1 200 mm of annual precipitation. The soils belong to the Andisols order. The purpose of this work was to determine the potential of carbon placement and storage in two agroforestry systems of the Ecuadorian highlands, planted in 1995, in comparison with an open field system, in order to generate use- ful references for the change of land use from conventional systems to sustainable systems and friendly with the environment. The AFS studied were: 1) Acacia melanoxylum L. and Buddleja incana Ruiz y Pavón; and 2) Alnus acuminata O. Ktze and Sparteum junceum L. Each System was composed of two rows of trees 30 m long, with 30 trees and 30 shrubs, separated in alternat- ing spacings of 1m and 2m between rows, in the space between the rows of trees and shrubs three pasture options were evaluated. In the same manner, plots of Andean crops were planted one me- ter from the tree line on both external sides of the barriers. The variables evaluated were: apparent density of soil, total Organic Carbon, biomass of tree and shrub species. To estimate the aerial biomass of tree species, two allometric models were used. Carbon stored, in the first 12 years, in System A. melanoxylum and B. incana was 13% more carbon (168.49 t ha-1) than an System with A. acuminata and S. junceum (148.93 t ha-1) and 38% more carbon than an open air agricultural field system (122.22 t ha-1), at twelve years. About 75% of the carbon stored in an agroforestry system is found in the surface layer of the soil (0,2 m), this characteristic reveals the importance and care that must be given to this resource when deciding on the type of management.
